I’m remembering what it felt like to spend so much time on teaching because I’ve been inundated the past two weeks by new faculty who are frustrated about how much time, energy and effort they are spending on teaching and service and how little is “left over” for research and writing. (The Teaching Trap. Armando Bengochea March 15, 2010)
Teaching Trapの定義:
The trap is when new tenure-track faculty spend the vast majority of their time on teaching at the expense of their research and writing and then find that their limited research productivity endangers their ability to be promoted at their current institution, or move to another one. (The Teaching Trap. Armando Bengochea March 15, 2010)
Concentrate on your research. If your research is good, no one will care if you can teach. After all, when was the last time someone got tenure for being a good teacher? (Academic Scientists at Work: To Teach or Not to Teach? By Jeremy M. Boss, Susan H. EckertMay. 9, 2003 , 8:00 AM sciencemag.org)
Put research and publishing ahead of the needs of your students. You can be a good teacher after you get tenure.
Once you have established your classes, do not reinvent the wheel every
semester. Make small tweaks to improve classes, do not overhaul unless directed to from the outside. (Getting Started on the Tenure Track: Challenges and Strategies for Success Article in Schole · January 2019 DOI: 10.1080/1937156X.2019.1589804)

People labelled as bullies rarely self-identify in the role, believing their behaviour to be perfectly acceptable. (White coat bullies. Roger Collier. CMAJ August 05, 2014 186 (11) 820) (訳:当サイト)
A bad supervisor can perpetuate a wide range of aggressive behaviors over time with the only goal of humiliating and frightening the target. An abusive supervisor ignores the victim’s views and opinion. An example is when a PI doesn’t listen to the opinions of a certain lab member or doesn’t allow that person to speak at all during lab meetings. To block the victim’s career, the bully supervisor can decide to change the victim’s project for no obvious reason. For instance, a trainee proposes new ideas for his/her project, but the PI doesn’t allow him/her to perform any experiments that can improve the project. You can have supervisors who are brilliant in their work as scientists but who don’t necessarily have people skills. (イジメ行為を働くボスたち Bosses Who Bully By Irene S. Levine Science Careers Sep. 22, 2006, 8:00 AM)(訳:当サイト)
なぜスーパーバイザーが一部の人間をいじめの標的にするのか little is still known as to why certain individuals are picked by supervisors as targets for abuse (Taking it out on survivors: Submissive employees, downsizing, and abusive supervision. 自己評価が低く仲間からのサポートも少ない人ほどスーパーバイザーから攻撃されやすい。Employees with poor core-self evaluations (an aggregate measure related to self-esteem and sense of control) and poor coworker support were more likely to experience aggressive behavior from their supervisor (belittling, blaming, etc.). Several of my lab mates are bullied by our supervisor. I use this term because the people affected tend to be the ones with less confidence, who don’t answer back and don’t stand up for themselves. Other people (including me) have a good relationship with this supervisor so this issue doesn’t affect everyone. (Bullying supervisors – what really is the best strategy to deal with it? PhD Discussion Forum 19 May 2014 20:51)
Last year after five years of working together, my former supervisor decided he had in fact just realized I was incapable of scientific research, and should not get a PhD, so goodbye. (I am obviously summarizing rapidly a project that wasn’t working, and his lack of supervision which became pretty abusive.) He was department head so there was little to be done, and the board supposed to supervise my PhD’s official advice was “we can’t tell you what to do, so think about what makes you happy,” and then get pissed when I said what made me happy was being treated fairly and finishing my PhD. aprilone78 2010-09-06 )

When you’ve lived all the time as number one or number two (or even possibly number three) in high school science, and when you know that everybody who’s below average in the science courses where you came from is a complete idiot, and now you suddenly discover that you are below average – and half of you guys are – it’s a terrible blow, because you imagine that it means you’re as dumb as those guys used to be in high school, relatively. (The Quotable Feynman)
But there is also a certain disadvantage: because Caltech has such a good reputation, almost everybody who’s the first or second in his high school class applies here. There are lots of high schools, and all the very best men apply. Now, we have tried to figure out a system of selection,
with all kinds of tests, so that we get the best of the best. And so you guys have been very carefully picked out from all these schools to come here. But we’ re still working on it, because we’ve found a very serious problem: no matter how carefully we select the men, no matter how patiently we make the analysis, when they get here something happens: it always turns out that approximately half of them are below average!
Of course you laugh at this because it’s self-evident to the rational mind, but not to the emotional mind – the emotional mind can’t laugh at this. That’s the great disadvantage of Caltech: that this psychological blow is so difficult to take. Of course, I’m not a psychologist; I’m imagining all this. I don’t know how it would really be, of course!
The question is what to do if you find you’re below average. There are two possibilities. (Feynman’s Tips on Physics: Reflections, Advice, Insights, Practice)
