“I’m the boss, get it? Do what I say or get out of my lab.” (3 Academic Advisors Who Will Ruin Your PhD Career cheekyscientist.com)(訳:当サイト)

People labelled as bullies rarely self-identify in the role, believing their behaviour to be perfectly acceptable. (White coat bullies. Roger Collier. CMAJ August 05, 2014 186 (11) 820) (訳:当サイト)

A bad supervisor can perpetuate a wide range of aggressive behaviors over time with the only goal of humiliating and frightening the target. An abusive supervisor ignores the victim’s views and opinion. An example is when a PI doesn’t listen to the opinions of a certain lab member or doesn’t allow that person to speak at all during lab meetings. To block the victim’s career, the bully supervisor can decide to change the victim’s project for no obvious reason. For instance, a trainee proposes new ideas for his/her project, but the PI doesn’t allow him/her to perform any experiments that can improve the project.

You can have supervisors who are brilliant in their work as scientists but who don’t necessarily have people skills. (イジメ行為を働くボスたち Bosses Who Bully By Irene S. Levine Science Careers Sep. 22, 2006, 8:00 AM)(訳:当サイト)

なぜスーパーバイザーが一部の人間をいじめの標的にするのか little is still known as to why certain individuals are picked by supervisors as targets for abuse (Taking it out on survivors: Submissive employees, downsizing, and abusive supervision. Pedro Neves. Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology First published: 08 April 2014)(訳:当サイト)

Employees with poor core-self evaluations (an aggregate measure related to self-esteem and sense of control) and poor coworker support were more likely to experience aggressive behavior from their supervisor (belittling, blaming, etc.). (End Abusive Behavior on Your Team Liane Davey, Harvard Business Review JULY 18, 2014)(訳:当サイト)

(1) Micromanaging. Some PI’s check up on their students daily, even multiple times a day.

(2) Hostile-aggressive. Some PI’s are routinely raise their voice, use strong language, or try to put a guilt trip on you.

(Bullying in Lab: Are PIs Guilty? by DORA FARKAS)(訳:当サイト)

Several of my lab mates are bullied by our supervisor. I use this term because the people affected tend to be the ones with less confidence, who don’t answer back and don’t stand up for themselves. Other people (including me) have a good relationship with this supervisor so this issue doesn’t affect everyone. (Bullying supervisors – what really is the best strategy to deal with it? PhD Discussion Forum 19 May 2014 20:51)

Last year after five years of working together, my former supervisor decided he had in fact just realized I was incapable of scientific research, and should not get a PhD, so goodbye. (I am obviously summarizing rapidly a project that wasn’t working, and his lack of supervision which became pretty abusive.) He was department head so there was little to be done, and the board supposed to supervise my PhD’s official advice was “we can’t tell you what to do, so think about what makes you happy,” and then get pissed when I said what made me happy was being treated fairly and finishing my PhD.
