国際学会発表の英文はyouglish.comで

英語の研究プレゼンで使える英文フレーズと発音は youglish.com でマスターできます。

国際学会などで英語で発表をすることになった場合、どんな英文が使えるのか、どんな風に発音するのか悩みがつきません。そんな日本人研究者の悩みをズバリ解決する凄いウェブツールがあることをツイッターで知りました。

youglish.comというものですが、これは使えます。検索できること自体すごいのですが、このツールでは、YOUTUBE動画の下に、英文トランスクリプトが大きく表示され、しかもその下の操作ボタンを使うと、何回も同じ場所を繰り返し再生したり、5秒前に戻って再生したり、ポーズして自分で発音練習する間をとったりできます。そして、次の動画に移動したり(右側の青緑色のボタン)、前の動画に戻ったりもできます。この操作性が実に素晴らしいため、非常に能率よくいろいろな人の発音を参考にしながら自分で英文フレーズの発音練習をすることができます。

話の流れをつくることの重要性

プレゼンは、講演者がバスの運転手として乗客を目的地に運ぶようなものです。トークの最初の部分では、お客さんをバスに乗せなければなりません。そして乗客に対して、「○○行きのバスです。」と目的地を明確にアナウンスする必要があります。トークの途中では、お客さんが「本当にこのバスは目的地に行くんだろうか?」と不安がって途中下車してしまうことないようにする必要があります。そしてトークの最後では、お客さんが期待した通りの目的地できっちり下ろしてあげることが必要です。このバスの例えは、昔プレゼン方法のセミナーで聞いたことなのですが、なるほどと思いました。話の流れを作るために便利な英語表現をみていきましょう。

 

今日の講演で何を話すのかをまず伝える表現

「今日お話することは、‥」を英語で言う場合、
動詞+目的語、
What節+動詞、
どちらの形も同じくらいよく使われます。

日本で英語の読み書きをさんざん勉強してアメリカに行きましたが、会話の中でとても新鮮に響いたのがWHAT節でした。とても便利な言い方なのでWHAT節なしで英会話は成立しません。しかし私が英語の勉強中にはほとんどノーマークだったフレーズです。もちろん日常会話でもセミナーでもふんだんに使います。

WHAT節のひとまとまりは一息でしゃべり切りましょう。途中でつっかえると聴きづらいです。単語を考えずに口が勝手に動くようになるまで何百回も練習することをお勧めします。
ゆっくり話すのはもちろんOK.英語を話すときに一番重要なのは、つっかえたり淀んだりせずに、流れることです。

動詞talkを用いた表現

重要なポイントを述べる

長いトークですと結局何がポイントだったのか曖昧になってしまう恐れがあります。そこでトークの序盤に、一番伝えたいことはこれこれです、という言い方をよくします。要するに結論にあたることを一文で言い切って、残りのトークはその結論を支持するための実験データを示すだけですよ、ということを伝えてあげるわけです。

The point here is that ~ 「ここでポイントとなるのは~です。」

The important point here is that ~ 「ここでの重要なポイントは、~です。」

 

どんな実験・解析を行ったのかを伝える

How do we do that? 「さて、どうやってそれをやればよいのでしょうか?」研究目的を述べたあとで、具体的な方法を述べる前の前置きとして使えそうなフレーズです。

What we did is ~ (1515件)我々が行ったことは、

We conducted  a ~ analysis.

 

予測される結果を述べる

So, the prediction is that ~ 「予期されることは、~」

 

実験結果・発見したことを述べるときの言い方

What we found is ~ (1239件)「我々が見つけたことは、~」

Now, what we found is ~ 「さて、我々が見つけたことは~」

Furthermore, we found ~ 「さらに~ということを見出しました。」

That’s exactly what we observed. 「その予想通りのことが実際に観察されました。」

便利なWhat節

What節は本当に万能です。What節を使った英文フレーズがスムーズに口をついて出てくるようにすれば、英語でのプレゼンが非常に楽になります。主語にYouを用いれば、聴衆の意識を対象に向けさせる効果があります。主語にWeを用いれば、講演者と聴衆の一体感を演出する効果があります。

質疑応答

質問を切り出すときの英語表現

My question is about ~(名詞)). 「私の質問は~に関することです。」(このように質問内容をまず最初におおざっぱに伝えたほうが、演者に質問内容を理解してもらいやすくなります。)

I wanted to ask you a question about ~ 「~について質問したいと思います。」(wantedと過去形が良く使われるようです。口調が柔らかくなるのでしょうか。)

Well, that’s a great question.  「それは良い質問です。」(英語ではありきたりの表現ですが、日本語の学会で下手にこういう受け答えをすると相手に対して失礼に響くことが多いので要注意。)
