魚などの下等な動物は鏡に映った自分を他の個体だと思い込んで、鏡の中の自分に対して攻撃したりします。ヒトやチンパンジー（大型類人猿）は鏡に映った自分を自分自身と認識できることが知られており、イルカ、ゾウなどでもそのような「鏡像認知」能力を示す報告がありましたが、サルの仲間に関してはそのような能力はないと考えられていました。

今回、中国の研究グループがマカクザルも鏡に映った自分を自分だと認識している可能性があるという論文をカレントバイオロジー誌に発表しました。

しかしながら、1970年にチンパンジーが鏡に映った自分を自分と認識していることを報告したゴードン・ギャラップ（Gordon Gallup）博士は、サルがそのように振舞うように訓練された結果に過ぎないとして、この研究結果の結論は誤っていると批判しています。
