英語で論文を書くときに、ついつい格調高い言葉を使おうとしてelucidateだのutilizeだのを多用してしまいがちなのですが、英文校正に出すともっと平易な単語に直されることが多いです。

なぜuse でなくutilizeなのか？なぜutilizeでなくuseなのか？を考えてみたいと思います。

utilizeの意味はケンブリッジディクショナリーによれば、

to use something in an effective way（dictionary.cambridge.org）

ということなので、単に使うというよりも、利用するという意味です。
